Tooth Thickness Measurement Diagram
The appendix defines the diagram and procedure for measuring the tooth thickness of an involute gear drive at the constant chord. It is used when inspecting tooth wear of spur and helical gear drives.
Appendix 3. DIAGRAM of tooth thickness measurement of an involute gear drive
General provisions
- The tooth thickness (S of the tooth) is measured at the constant chord, whose height (H of the chord) is determined for a spur and helical involute gear drive by the formula: H of the chord = 0.748m, where m is the tooth module.
- The diagram indicates: S of the tooth — tooth thickness, H of the constant chord — height of the constant chord, pitch circle diameter.

Procedure
- Determine the height of the constant chord by the formula H of the chord = 0.748mm is the tooth module; the formula is applicable to a spur and helical involute gear drive
- Measure the tooth thickness (S of the tooth) at the constant chord with a gear tooth vernier caliper of the ШЗН ТУ 2-034-773-89 typegear tooth vernier calipers of other types may be used
Notes
- Tooth thickness measurements are made with gear tooth vernier calipers of the ШЗН ТУ 2-034-773-89 type (or other types).
- Note! Measurement of the tooth thickness at the pitch circle chord is permitted.
