Measuring Combustion Pressure in Cylinders

Appendix 5 sets out the procedure for measuring combustion pressure in the cylinders of locomotive and marine diesel engines by means of a maximeter connected through an indicator cock. Measurements are taken on a warmed-up engine under load, cylinder by cylinder.

Procedure for Measuring Combustion Pressure in the Cylinders of Locomotive and Marine Diesel Engines

Procedure

1. Warm up the engine to its operating temperature.
2. Set the engine speed at which maximum power is reached and apply a load to the engine.
3. Connect the maximeter to the engine cylinder through a special indicator cock.If the cylinder has no indicator cock, one must be installed with the engine shut down.
4. Open the cylinder indicator cock, close the maximeter valve and record the maximum pressure gauge reading.
5. Open the maximeter valve, close the cylinder indicator cock and disconnect the maximeter.
6. Measure the combustion pressure in the remaining cylinders in the same way.
